About

My name is Matthew. I’m a PhD candidate in a joint program with Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia and the University of Copenhagen.

In thinking about carving out an entire career in research, my ambition is to unify and synergize my interests in molecular biology, physiology, evolutionary anthropology, conservation biology and environmental sustainability using the ‘powerhouse of the cell’ - the mitochondria - as my research anchor. I haven’t yet determined how all of these components might fit together. I expect it will take an entire career. Hence, Slow Science. My intuition is that while I develop fundamental knowledge and skills in molecular biology and specifically mitochondrial biology over the course of my PhD, I’ll be able to utilise these skills in the future by taking them to other research groups and collaborators who might benefit from them and slowly connect the threads of my inter-disciplinary ambition.
